Proper tree pruning “Respects Tree Beauty, Respects Tree Defense Systems, Respects Tree Dignity.” Dr. Alex L. Shigo.

There are many types of trees and many reasons for pruning trees.

Tree Pruning Types-

Maintenance tree pruning and hazard reduction pruning usually consists of one or more of the tree pruning types noted below.

Crown Cleaning – Crown cleaning shall consist of the selective removal of one or more of the following items: dead, dying, or diseased branches, weak branches, and watersprouts. Crown cleaning is done to reduce the risk of branches falling from the tree and to reduce the spread of insects, decay, and diseases from dead and dying branches into the rest of the tree. Crown cleaning is the preferred pruning type for mature trees because it does not remove live branches unnecessarily.

Pruning to Thin Canopy- Crown thinning consists of the selective removal of branches to increase light penetration, air movement, and reduce weight. Proper thinning reduces crown density while retaining the canopys shape and an even distribution of foliage throughout the crown. It is recommended that not more than 25 percent of the crown be removed within an annual growing season.

Pruning for Clearance consists of the selective removal or pruning of branches of a tree to provide clearance for buildings, signs, roadways, wires, and pedestrians.
Reduction Pruning, or Crown Shaping – reduction pruning decreases the height and/or spread of a tree. Done to minimize risk of failure, appearance or form. End weight reduction on long heavy limbs is used to reduce the likelihood of branch failure. Consideration should be given to the ability of a species to sustain this type if pruning.

View Pruning – View Pruning is selective thinning of framework limbs or specific areas of the crown to allow a view of a object from a predetermined point.

Crown Restoration – Crown Restoration pruning should improve the structure, form and appearance of trees which have been severely headed, vandalized, or storm damaged.

Proper pruning requires the arborist to know, what is the best thing to do, and what is the best way to do it. We are certified Arborists with over twenty years of experience and learning under our belts.

Proactive tree care service and tree protection through preventative maintenance and proper pruning will help to protect you and your property, and enhance the enjoyment you receive from having beautiful, healthy trees.

Well-cared-for trees are attractive and can add value to your property.

Improper pruning may injure your tree and produce the opposite of what your goals were.

Here are some signs the tree has been worked on by climber who does not know or does not care about proper tree pruning.

1. SPIKE WOUNDS IN TRUNK OF TREE-Wounds made from climbing spikes can attract insects that carry microorganisms that may cause serious tree diseases.

2. STUB CUTS- unsightly and food for organisms that start rot and cankers.

3. FLUSH CUTS-A major tree defense system has been destroyed, the branch collar.

4. TOPPING- The practice causes serious injuries to large trees and leads to hazardous conditions.

5. OVER PRUNING-The tree framework is destroyed, roots are weakened, excessive sprouting starts.

Arboriculture means the care of trees.
